Technical Information

The functioning of a butterfly valve

The function of a butterfly valve is to control the flow of a medium through a pipe. In the cross-section of the flow, a rotatable disc ensures the required flow. If the disc of the butterfly valve is parallel to the flow, it is fully open.

Variants and differences

The butterfly valves from END-Armaturen are versatile valves that are flow-efficient in design and can be easily automated. In addition to long service lives and switching cycles, they impress with their robustness and adaptability.

Manual operated butterfly valves

Manual operation of the butterfly valves is possible with a worm gear or a hand lever. The hand lever can be adjusted in 10 locking positions and use a grid disc to show which position the valve disc is in.

Butterfly valves with pneumatic actuator

Pneumatically operated butterfly valves are used very frequently because they are much safer compared to electrical variants when used in a plant area that is at risk of explosion. Pneumatic actuation can be implemented using two types of actuators.

  • Double-acting: The butterfly valve is opened and closed by compressed air.
  • Single-acting: With pneumatic single-acting actuators butterfly valves, the valve is only actuated in one direction by compressed air. A package of springs is preloaded. The restoring forces of the springs then cause actuation in the other direction.

Butterfly valve with electric actuator

Both pneumatic and electrically actuated butterfly valves are particularly suitable for applications where the valves are to be operated very frequently or remotely. Pneumatically actuated butterfly valves should be selected in plant areas that are at risk of explosion, as they are then safer

Automatability of a butterfly valve

Butterfly valves can be operated manually or automatically. The automation here is associated with little effort. In order to design a suitable actuator for automation, the following questions must be answered:

  • What is the torque of the valve disc?
  • Is it a lubricating medium or not?
  • Do you want electric, hydraulic or pneumatic actuation?
  • How does the actuator work? (regulated or open-loop control mode, "open/closed" mode)

Spare parts for butterfly valves

Depending on the type of medium and the butterfly valve, the built-in sleeve may wear out. Sleeves are particularly stressed by aggressive media, for example due to mechanical or chemical effects. You will find a large selection of sleeves as spare parts for different series and sizes in our shop. Some sleeves have additional reinforcement rings for even greater resistance.

Typical application and media

Typical application for butterfly valves

Butterfly valves are used for a wide variety of applications, machines and media. For example, flows of liquids and gases can be effectively regulated.

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Fuel Production
  • Process engineering
  • Mining
  • Steel Industry
  • Food industry
  • Automotive industry
  • Energy Industry
  • Power supply
  • Medical technology
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • Irrigation
  • Swimming pool construction

Butterfly valves for different media

Butterfly valves can be used for a large number of media – regardless of whether they are systems, machines or tank and silo vehicles, for example. A few examples in the overview:

  • Water
  • Wastewater
  • Seawater
  • Gases
  • Air
  • Plastic
  • Bulk material
  • Oils
  • Fats
  • Food
  • Fuels

 WAFER-TYPE BODY

Art. WA

The wafer-type butterfly valves Art. WA are clamped between two flanges according to EN 1092-1. Without using additional flange seals.

 LUG TYPE BODY

Art. WM

The LUG-type butterfly valve Art. WM are also screwed directly onto a flange. This results in smooth transitions within the pipeline without dead spaces or turbulence.

In which nominal sizes are the butterfly valves available??

The butterfly valves are immediately available from stock in the nominal sizes DN50 up to DN300. The versions are differentiated by the type of installation in the pipe system.

How much does a butterfly valve cost?

There is a wide variety of butterfly valves. The prices are affected by the following factors:

  • The type you want
  • The type of actuation
  • The way the actuator works
  • The size of the butterfly
  • The body material
  • The disc material
  • The sleeve material
  • Approvals/Acceptances

In our online shop we have an extensive range with over 900 different butterfly valves. Find out about current prices, approvals, additional data sheets with technical information and instructions.
